Scientists Grow Functional Vocal Cord Tissue in the Lab
Scientists have succeeded in growing functional vocal-cord tissue in the laboratory, a major step toward restoring a voice to people who have lost their vocal cords to cancer surgery or other injuries. They were able to bioengineer vocal-cord tissue able to transmit sound. Peripheral blood mesenchymal stem cells (PBMSCs) were seeded into a nanofiber scaffold of self-assembling peptide (SAP) and cultured in osteogenic medium. Transplantation of Three-Dimensional Artificial Human Vascular Tissues Fabricated Using an Extracellular Matrix Nanofilm-Based Cell-Accumulation Technique
Scientists established a novel three-dimensional tissue-constructing technique, referred to as the ‘cell-accumulation method’, which is based on the self-assembly of cultured human cells. In this technique, cells are coated with fibronectin and gelatin to construct extracellular matrix nanofilms and cultured to form multi-layers in vitro. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med] Abstract

Cardiac Derived Extracellular Matrix Enhances Cardiogenic Properties of Human Cardiac Progenitor Cells
Researchers investigated the influence of the myocardial matrix hydrogel on Sca-1-like human fetal and adult cardiac progenitor cells when encapsulated in 3D in vitro. They also evaluated the use of the myocardial matrix as hydrogel for in vivo cell transplantation and demonstrated that the gelation properties of the hydrogel are not influenced by the cells.
