The Generation of 3D Tissue Models Based on Hyaluronan Hydrogel-Coated Microcarriers within a Rotating Wall Vessel Bioreactor  ShareThis
Researchers designed a microcarrier bead coated with a synthetic extracellular matrix composed of a disulfide-crosslinked hyaluronan and gelatin hydrogel for 3D tissue engineering, that allows for enzyme-free cell detachment under mild reductive conditions (i.e. by a thiol-disulfide exchange reaction). [Biomaterials]

A Strategy to Fix a Broken Heart
Engineers and physicians have built a scaffold that supports the growth and integration of stem cell-derived cardiac muscle cells. [Press release from the University of Washington discussing online prepublication in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA]

Proangiogenic Scaffolds as Functional Templates for Cardiac Tissue Engineering
Researchers established a foundation for spatially controlled cardiac tissue engineering by providing discrete compartments for cardiomyocytes and stroma in a scaffold that enhances vascularization and integration while controlling the inflammatory response. [Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A]

Radially Aligned, Electrospun Nanofibers as Dural Substitutes for Wound Closure and Tissue Regeneration Applications
The paper reports the fabrication of scaffolds consisting of radially aligned poly(epsilon-caprolactone) nanofibers by utilizing a collector composed of a central point electrode and a peripheral ring electrode. [ACS Nano]

Mineralized Human Primary Osteoblast Matrices as a Model System to Analyze Interactions of Prostate Cancer Cells with the Bone Microenvironment
Researchers show that growth of prostate cancer cells on matrices produced by primary human osteoblasts mimics key features of prostate cancer bone metastases and thus is a suitable model system to study the tumor/bone micro-environment interaction in this disease. [Biomaterials]

Tocotrienols Have Potent Antifibrogenic Effects in Human Intestinal Fibroblasts
Tocotrienols exert multiple effects on human intestinal fibroblast, reducing cell proliferation, enhancing programmed cell death through apoptosis and autophagy, and decreasing extracellular matrix production. [Inflamm Bowel Dis]

Interleukin-18 Induces EMMPRIN Expression in Primary Cardiomyocytes via JNK/Sp1 Signaling, and MMP9 in Part via EMMPRIN, and Through AP-1 and NF-KappaB Activation
Results suggest that the elevated expression of IL-18 during myocardial injury and inflammation may favor extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) and MMP induction, and extracellular matrix degradation. [Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol]

Cell-Derived Matrix Enhances Osteogenic Properties of Hydroxyapatite
In vitro-derived extracellular matrix mimics the native bone matrix, enhances the osteogenic properties of the hydroxyapatite microparticles, and might modulate the local inflammatory response in a bone repair-favorable way. [Tissue Eng Part A]

Guiding Epithelial Cell Phenotypes with Engineered Integrin Specific Recombinant Fibronectin Fragments
The studies demonstrate the importance of synergy in regulating epithelial cell phenotype relevant to tissue engineering as well as the utility of engineered integrin-specific extracellular matrix fragments in guiding cell phenotype. [Tissue Eng Part A]

Panel Recommends Defining Select Agents by DNA Sequence
The way to bring synthetically designed genomes that could be potentially as deadly as known pathogens under regulation, according to a new National Academies report, is to develop a new system of defining select agents based on DNA sequences. [ScienceInsider]

Free Access to U.S. Research Papers Could Yield $1 Billion in Benefits
A new economic analysis finds that making taxpayer-funded scientific papers freely available would yield more than $1 billion in benefits to the U.S. economy over 30 years–five times the costs of archiving the papers. [ScienceInsider]

Scientists Decry Proposed Ban on Chimp Research
In the latest twist in the protracted debate over the use of chimpanzees in biomedical research, U.S. senators introduced the Great Ape Protection Act, an identical bill to one that has been stuck in a House of Representatives committee for more than a year. [Senate, United States]
